Nikon Z7II (sample) vs Sony A9II – AF focusing test in low light

ENGLISH BELOW
———————————–

both cameras were used with:
APERTURE PRIORITY
ISO AUTO
WB AUTO
BURST MODE

MENU SETTINGS:
Nikon: Focus Tracking + lock on = QUICK
Low-light AF = ON
Sony: aperture drive = focus prority

both cameras focusing lights assist are off

FOCUS MODE:
NIKON = WIDE AREA – S (I think this is the best mode for this set)
SONY= EXPANDED FLEXIBLE SPOT (I think this is the best mode for this set)

Lenses:
NIKON: Nikkor 85mm 1.8 S e 20mm 1.8 S
Sony: 135 1.8 GM e 24mm 1.4 S

ENGLISH

Thanks to Nital who provided me with a still unfinished sample of Z7II (firmware 0.6) I did several tests with the brand new mirrorless that will be on the market in the next few days.
I created a small set to evaluate the autofocus capabilities significantly improved over the previous version.

In this case, I compared it with the best performing among the Sony’s cameras, the A9II.

After trying all the AF modes of both machines, I selected the one that seemed to me to be the most performing and resumed their operating mode.

As you can see from the video in this situation Nikon is able to do better than Sony, especially in low light situations.

PLEASE NOTE: in order to significantly increase the locking capacity of the subject by the Nikon Z7II, I activated on the menu the “AF in low light” mode.

The Sony viewfinder appears cleaner in very low light situations, but struggles to lock and in semi-darkness it fails to lock subjects; what instead Nikon can do. Nikon otherwise has a much more grainy image while looking through the viewfinder without pressing the focus button.
