Nikon D850 vs Z7 vs Z7II sample
Given the many questions that come to me for the comparison of these three cameras, I worked for 4 days doing tests and direct comparisons.
I have summarized the main features with pros and cons of each camera with the table below.
I marked in green the one that performs best, in red the one that does worse or the most serious shortcomings. In pink and then yellow the less important shortcomings.
I remind you that this table is the result of my personal experience and can be shared or not depending on the use of each one.
I also remind you that I am currently testing a NOT FINAL version of Z7II and that the final may still have other improvements or variations.
In the table you can immediately see how the advantages of the Z system are now evident and that the Z7II is again a leap forward compared to the “old” Z7.
I have been shooting with the Z7 and sometimes with the Z6 for two years. The D850 for what I do is outdated and I think I will sell it shortly.
The electronic viewfinder of mirrorless cameras offers many more advantages than disadvantages, the stabilized sensor allows you to shoot much more easily hand-held, the use in liveview of reflex cameras such as the D850 is very slow and another fundamental aspect is the new Z lenses are really another what compared to those for reflex. Fast, clear, quiet and generally smaller and / or lighter. Only thing I was missing in the Z7 compared to the D850 was a little more burst and AF speed in the action (excluding people in which it’s fine). This has been improved with the latest firmware updates but which Z7II has further improved by providing the optimum AF system.
In these days of the yellow zone I have not been able to try a lot on the field but I wanted to photograph birds with the Z7II because it was one of the few genres where the Z7’s AF was a little more difficult. In fact, the new Z7II fully satisfied me. I did many other tests in the studio and outdoors including macro, still-life, portrait and the Z7II has a versatility and speed higher than the Z7 and above all compared to the D850.
Among the innovations that I appreciated the most on the Z7II, in addition to burst, autofocus and expanded buffer, I find the times function up to 900 ”with advance timer very useful. Finally, you no longer need to use a stopwatch for long exposures, you can program startrails with longer times and therefore with fewer shots and they are very convenient for astronomical photos with tracker.
The open display sensor is also very useful, which keeps it always active even when we cover the eyepiece. It seems like a small thing but it is fundamental.
4K videos at 60fp have a much more pleasant and natural fluidity.
For dynamic range and sealing at high ISO I expect the codecs for Camera RAW to make more rigorous comparisons but already using Nikon Capture NX-D it seems that the ZII is the best of the three and at the moment I have not seen any banding problems.
For those who make videos it is also needless to say that the Z system is much more powerful than what a D850 can do.
PS: to make the most of the Z in action, I also think that it is essential to reprogram the function keys fn1 and fn2 and the quick commands on the touch screen of the “i” button. For example, I set the AF type to fn1, button present on D850 that is missing on Z and focus tracking on fn2.
Also in the touch menu I put all the functions I use most such as focus stacking, exposure bracketing, silent shutter, etc …
I don’t want to go too far and in case I am at your disposal if you have any doubts or questions.
Thanks to Nikon and Nital for the chance to test the Z7II and my friend Alfredo Scurria for the birdlife photos.
